Jamaica Inn
This topic is for discussing his work in the 1939 Alfred Hitchcock film Jamaica Inn.

Re: Jamaica Inn
Another of my favorite movies! Harry the Pedlar was an enjoyable addition to this story. What a nasty little sneak he was! Thoroughly despicable, and very entertaining. I LOVED his signature whistle.

Re: Jamaica Inn
I liked his whistle too. That was the first time I had seen or heard of Mr. Williams and I don't know if it was the little hat and scruffy beard...or just fine acting, but I thought he was quite sexy!

Re: Jamaica Inn
I totally agree with both of you! The whistle is especially great at the very end, after the officer slaps him for spitting in his face, and he just smiles and resumes his whistling. He is incredibly sexy, both for his fine acting (it's quite a feat to steal a scene from both Charles Laughton *and* Robert Newton, don't you think?) *and* the entire visual effect! He was a handsome guy to begin with, but that scruffy look drives me wild! (BTW, he reprises the whistle in at least one other movie; I think it's Hatter's Castle. Another memorable performance, but he's even more despicable IMO ... and no grungy look to compensate! Still, even that performance has grown on me.)

Re: Jamaica Inn
I think the whistle made the character. Charles Laughton's character and Joss both had traits that reminded me of Mike Myers' characters. I don't know if those traits were common ways of acting or if he liked this movie. I thoroughly enjoy everyone's acting in this movie, even the small characters like Mrs Marney. There was a whole lot of comedy in it, and I loved how dark everything was. The atmosphere reminded me of Ann Radcliffe novels.
The first thought that crossed my mind when I saw Emlyn was that he looked like my boyfriend (who's middle name is Harry), and Robert Newton looked like his cousin. The actors had a little more hair.
I love the length of Emlyn's hair in this movie. Had he been a blond I probably wouldn't have bothered reading about the actor when I looked up the movie, although I would still have appreciated the acting.

Re: Jamaica Inn
Wow, your boyfriend looks like Emlyn Williams? Lucky you!!! :-) Emlyn sure was a handsome man. And his cousin looks like Robert Newton? Does he have a girlfriend? ;-)
I'll be very interested to hear how you think the novel and the movie compare. The movie has a lot of atmosphere, and the acting is indeed good, but compared to the book, I feel the script left *a lot* to be desired. (One of author Daphne du Maurier's complaints was that they had turned her cutthroat band of smugglers into bumbling "Peter Pan pirates." And "Sea Lawyer Sidney"--not the name of a character in the book--really does remind me of Smee in the Disney cartoon! There's not a lot of humor in the book, but it's a much more exciting and romantic adventure, and it gives you much more of a feel for the real Cornwall.)
But then maybe we should start a separate topic for talking about the book so as to avoid spoiling the book for anyone
