In case you're having any trouble figuring out how to get around this board (specifically, getting back to the previous topic or the main page after you've made a post, other than clicking your Back button), look at the upper left corner of the current message or group of messages (above the ads). There you'll find the links back to "Emlyn Williams" (the main page of the board), followed by the "forum" name (which seems to me more like a topic), and then the subtopic ... depending what level you're currently at. (The links aren't underlined, which is why I was having trouble figuring it out! Alas, I don't know enough about CSS to customize the look of this board the way I'd like to; this pre-existing theme seemed to go best with the site colors.) Anyway, to navigate back, just click on the link for the level you want to get back to.

Rules and guidelines

1. Be respectful of others and their opinions. Discussion of different opinions is welcome; "flaming" is not. Trolling (the intentional sowing of discord by making inflammatory remarks) will not be tolerated. (For a more complete explanation of trolling and how to respond, please visit this site: members.aol.com/intwg/trolls.htm.) Postings that violate this rule may be deleted at the administrator's discretion.

2. When discussing films, please be cautious about revealing information that could spoil the viewing experience for someone who has not seen the movie yet. When discussing major plot revelations or endings of films, be sure to preface such comments with the words "Spoiler alert."

3. Before starting a new topic, make sure a suitable topic for your post doesn't already exist. If it does, please post your comments as a reply instead.

Profanity filter

Recently, someone observed that the profanity filter is a bit too undiscerning (making perfectly fine words like "Hitchcock" and "Dickens" look obscene). Whilst browsing through the settings for the board just now, I noticed that, even though I've turned off the profanity filter (and created a custom one instead), this feature is currently not available--the profanity filter cannot be turned off for all users. Only you can override the setting in your own preferences.

To turn off the profanity filter, go into your Control Panel and click Miscellaneous Settings. You should find the check box there

Avatars

To create an avatar (an identifying image that will appear below your username on all postings):

1. Select an image to use. (The board doesn't provide them, so pick one from your hard drive--it can be a photo or an image you created with a graphics program.)

2. The size should be 100x100 pixels. (Open it up in your graphics program and resize it as necessary. If you have Photoshop, an easy way to size the picture is to set either the height or width, whichever is larger, to 100 pixels, with the other dimension being larger. Then crop the other dimension using the rectangle tool, but hold down the shift key; this will force the selection to be square.)

3. If you don't have your own website to store the photo, upload it to a free image-hosting site like Photobucket or ImageShack. Select the direct URL to the image and "copy" it.

4. Log into Runboard (if you haven't already) and go to the "Control Panel."

5. Click "Change miscellaneous options." (The Control Panel is also the place where you can set up your profile, under "Change my registration information." Better to compose it offline, then copy and paste it in here since the window is so small.)

6. Under "Change miscellaneous options," paste the URL (address) of your image into the first blank, next to "Avatar ..." (You can also change other preferences, like your signature, while you're here.)

7. At the bottom of the page, click "Save settings."
